The 19-year-old initially refused to reveal the identity of the woman behind his ballad No Name.

Nonetheless, it emerged yesterday she was Katie Lucia Keegan, also 19.

Ryan, a music student from Dublin, reportedly told a friend: ‘I have loved her for years. I adore her deeply.

‘I hope she now sees what I feel for her due to the fact I have written a song for the planet to hear.’

When asked about the inspiration behind his song at the Blackpool audition, he stated: ‘It’s about a buddy of mine that I’ve liked for a couple of years now. She hasn’t heard it however.’

fter his performance, Simon Cowell told him he had a ‘promising future’.

Nevertheless, Ryan revealed his BGT progress could be cut short since he currently signed a three-month contract with the Irish version of rival The Voice.

Los Angeles (CNN) – Officials have ruled the death of a 10-year-old girl who got into a fight last week to be a homicide, authorities said Monday.

Joanna Ramos, a fifth-grade student at Willard Elementary School, died of blunt force trauma to the head six hours after an altercation with a female classmate that lasted less than a minute, said Long Beach Police spokesman Sgt. Rico Fernandez.

Authorities have identified the other girl, who is 11, as well as several onlookers, and they are continuing to investigate what happened.

“There are several accounts of what transpired based on interviews with witnesses, but we have not concluded the precise motive,” Fernandez said.

In a statement, police said Ramos and her unidentified classmate had challenged each other to a planned fight when their school session ended Friday. “The two girls met in a nearby alley next to a church and began hitting each other,” Fernandez said.

The fight was brief, and no weapons were involved, authorities said.

According to Long Beach Unified School District spokesman Chris Eftychiou, Ramos finished her regular school session at 2:12 pm Friday and was supposed to remain on campus to begin her scheduled after-school program at 2:30.

“We believe the altercation occurred during that 15-minute window because she apparently left and returned for the session, which involves help with homework and academic-related activity,” said Eftychiou.

After the fight, the girls left and went their separate ways.

Ramos stayed in the afternoon session for about an hour but did not exhibit obvious signs of physical trauma, said Eftychiou. “When she did complain of not feeling well, her cousin picked her up, but we had no indication she was involved in an altercation,” he said.

“Only when she was at the hospital did we get word about the altercation and there is no indication that bullying was a factor,” said Eftychiou.

Once the investigation and autopsy are complete, the findings will be turned over to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for review and to determine whether charges will be filed in the case.

No arrests have been made, authorities said.

On Monday, grief counselors were brought into Willard Elementary to assist instructors and students. “It was a somber day,” said Eftychiou.

Ramos had been enrolled at the school for about a year and a half, he said.

Final updated at 12:39 PM on 20th February 2012

The Government is considering fining parents who take their young children on holiday in the course of term-time in a bid to improve attendance rates.

Holidays are second only to sickness as a reason given for absence, with families keen to take advantage of less expensive term-time breaks.

Big savings: Term-time holidays are drastically more affordable than those taken for the duration of the school holidays

Headteachers can presently sanction up to two weeks a year of ‘authorised absence’ for the duration of term-time to cover illness, poor weather and bereavements, but numerous heads come under pressure to grant it so that children can be taken on holidays.

It is believed that four.5million days of schooling are missed by pupils going on holidays, which are usually substantially much more high-priced in the course of school breaks.

Education Secretary Michael Gove is mentioned to be concerned that the perception that middle-class kids can miss out on school time creates a belief that truancy is accepted.

At present, parents who permit their young children to truant face a penalty of up to £100.

A source at the Department for Education mentioned: ‘Any time out of school has the prospective to harm a child’s education. That is why the Government will finish the distinction in between authorised and unauthorised absence.’

Education Secretary Michael Gove will be implementing new firm measures

Brian Lightman, general secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, said: ‘The discretionary ten days has grow to be a bit of a cultural expectation with parents viewing it as a proper in some instances. It is not.

‘Children only have a single likelihood to get their education proper and for schools to do their best for pupils. It is crucial that youngsters have excellent attendance.’

Term-time holidays are significantly more affordable than those taken in the school holidays.

Investigation by travelsupermarket.com reveals costs enhance by up to 42 per cent for a family of 4 taking a two-week trip to the Algarve for the duration of the school holidays.

For a household of four to remain all-inclusive for seven nights at a 4-star hotel in Playa de Las America in Spain it would cost £1,402 in June.

This is for a a single-bedroom apartment at the Gran Oasis Resort booked via Thomas Cook. For the identical package it expenses £2,037 in August and drops again to £1,591 in September.

Similarly, for a family members of 4 to remain all-inclusive for seven nights at a 5-star hotel in Makadi Bay in Egypt it would expense £1,991 in June. This is sharing one particular room at the Sunrise Royal Makadi Resort.

The identical package fees £2,585 in August and in September the price tag plunges to £2,050.

The Department of Education is expected to announce the new measures later this month.

On the (very short) list of my talents, going on holiday tops the lot – especially if the destination is the Caribbean. I am excellent at sunbathing, brilliant at snorkelling and am an Olympic-standard consumer of rum punches.

There are just two vacation skills I’ve never cracked. One is windsurfing – really no big deal. The second, however, is one I’ve tried unsuccessfully to master for years – not just on holiday, but every night. Sleep.

Tropical paradise: The Sleep School has been set up at LaSource resort in Grenada

Unfortunately, like one in ten Britons, I’m an insomniac. For periods I sleep wonderfully, but any stress can trigger a zombie phase of several months.

I slept not a wink the night before my A-level exams began, despite taking two sleeping pills that should have tranquillised a horse. The arrival of my two children shook me up so much that for the past few years I’ve subsisted (it doesn’t feel like living) on a few broken hours a night.

So a new Sleep School, to be held for a week at LaSource resort in Grenada, seemed made for me. I would be travelling to the tropics, but I’d also be taking daily sleep classes with insomnia specialist Dr Guy Meadows.

If I needed more convincing, I reasoned that five sessions in Dr Meadows’s London clinic would have cost me about £800, but at LaSource they would be included in an already generous all-inclusive package.

The nine-hour flight to Grenada rubbed in my failure to grasp this basic skill. Every other passenger nodded off straight after lunch and reopened their eyes just before touchdown. But every time I pulled on my eye mask, my heart and mind started racing.

By the time we arrived at LaSource, which, happily, sits just minutes from the airport, the Caribbean sun had set. I was so shattered that I wasn’t even interested in the welcome rum punches. I made straight for my room and passed out in the huge bed.

Out like a light: Julia learned to take the terror out of her nights thanks to Dr Guy Meadows

At 4am (8am in the UK), however, my internal alarm rang and I was fully awake. I tossed and turned on my super-luxurious mattress, like the princess and the pea. The noise of waves crashing below my window should have entranced me – instead they acted like a cheese-grater on my nerves. I swallowed what I vowed would be my last-ever sleeping pill and was out cold until 7am. The first sleep class was at ten, in the idyllic yoga pavilion looking over a lake surrounded by tropical vegetation. Hummingbirds dipped their beaks in orchids, herons drank from splashing fountains.

However, I was more interested in my classmates than the scenery. In the middle of the night, you feel incredibly lonely – convinced you are some kind of freak. But the 21 pupils who’d flown here from all over the globe didn’t look like weirdos. Instead, I saw normal men and women, from their early 20s to mid-60s.

We were all very different but had one thing in common. Guy (who disconcertingly looked too young to drive a car, let alone have ten years’ experience of reintroducing 1,000 insomniacs to the joys of kip) began the lesson by showing us a list of all the things people do to get to sleep.

Hot drinks, relaxation tapes, getting up to work on a jigsaw, special sleep-monitoring apps. Everyone groaned knowingly. We’d tried it all. Nothing worked.

‘I’ve seen worse,’ Guy comforted us. He told of clients swallowing four sleeping pills a night to no avail, or lying naked on the kitchen floor. ‘When you can’t sleep, you’d do anything to be cured.’

So what cure did he recommend, we asked eagerly.

‘None. We’re not here to learn from bad sleepers but to copy good sleepers. What do they do to get to sleep?’

‘Nothing,’ we ventured.

‘Exactly!’

This wasn’t what I wanted to hear after a 4,500-mile flight. I almost demanded my money back. But over the next five days, Guy’s hands-off approach was explained.

He introduced us to a bump in our brains called the amygdala. When cavemen were about to be attacked by lions, their amygdalas flooded their bodies with adrenalin to help them fight. Lions are no longer a problem for most of us. But in the 21st Century, some amygdalas misread tiny worries as terrifying dangers.

The perfect setting: You’ll find it hard not to unwind in Grenada

After the odd disturbed night (totally normal, according to Guy), most people resume their normal sleep pattern. But my overdeveloped amygdala now associates bedtime with misery. As soon as I put on my pyjamas, my body goes on red alert.

Ironically, modern ‘fix-its’, such as hot drinks and lavender on the pillow, make things worse. The amygdala figures that anything surrounded by so many rituals must be a serious threat and cranks up another notch. Guy helped us retrain our brains, not to fear bedtime.

We practised ‘mindfulness’, wandering round LaSource’s immaculate grounds concentrating on nothing but the feel of springy grass under our feet, the gentle birdsong, the plock of tennis balls on the nearby courts and the smell of bougainvillea.

When worries distracted us, he told us to greet them politely (‘like an auntie you don’t particularly like at Christmas’) before return-ing to focusing on the here and now. From then on, when I woke at 3am, instead of fretting about the crashing waves, I listened to them ‘mindfully’.

Dismal thoughts flooded in: ‘I’m awake, I’ll feel terrible tomorrow,’ but then I thought: ‘I’m awake, that’s interesting.’ My amygdala was fooled, and I was asleep again in minutes.

For the first time in years, a decent night’s sleep meant I was able to do more with my days than collapse on a lounger. LaSource was the perfect place to be. From dawn yoga to dusk t’ai chi, so many activities were on offer that my amygdala was now on overdrive working out how to fit in sleep school and my complimentary daily spa treatment and snorkelling round the rocks in the bay.

Then there was the worry of finding time to try each of the resort’s excellent restaurants. I was taken with the Cafe Deli, whose uninspiring name belied a menu of delicious sashimi and smoothies (though I stayed clear of the papaya, ginger and cucumber ‘mind opener’ before bedtime).

Camaraderie was strong among the sleep schoolers. Each morning, waiting for our omelettes to be cooked to order, we’d commiserate each other’s ‘bad’ nights and cheer good ones. By the end of the week, even the worst sleepers were reporting progress. Guy stressed that his wasn’t a magic solution. ‘You’ll still have bad nights,’ he warned. ‘But you’ll learn from them.’

Now I’ve been back home a month, the sleeping pills have been flushed away and, despite various stresses, I have been sleeping no longer like a baby (whoever invented that cliche clearly had no children) but instead like a hormonal teenager.

The only thing keeping me awake is wondering what excuse I can concoct to justify another week at LaSource.

Here’s hoping they introduce a ‘windsurfing for dummies’ school.

Kuoni (kuoni.co.uk) offers seven nights’ all-inclusive at LaSource from £1,689 per person, including return flights from Gatwick with British Airways, transfers, six spa treatments, three dives (PADI qualified), daily t’ai chi, yoga and watersports. The next sleep school will be held from June 3 to 9, 2012.

From articles I have study, The Miz is stuck in second gear right now, taking the blame for the poor purchase-rate from final years’ Survivor Series. Give me a break! Miz deserves much better from the firm.

Because breaking into the company, he has accomplished absolutely nothing but entertain, which is the name of the game. He has given his all, emerging as one of the finest heels in the game.

Under the proper circumstances, he could turn into champion once again, taking his game to the subsequent level. WWE should be cautious with how they handle the character, or else every thing that is been invested in him will go to waste.

I’m just a fan, not an expert. I will not sit right here and pretend that I get the logic of how enterprise behind the scenes is accomplished. Blaming The Miz for the Survivor Series is ridiculous to say the least. How in the planet could the organization, especially Vince McMahon, put the responsibility of a key pay per view on the shoulders of a single man?

Specially when that one man wasn’t necessarily the 1 who the fans came to see. The hype surrounding Survivor Series was the tag-team of Rock and Cena and how they would co-exist for one particular time only.

Honestly, you could have put any tag-team combination in there against them and it wouldn’t have mattered. What mattered most was seeing the two go at it, giving the fans a small taste of what we could anticipate at WrestleMania.

Other then Rock giving Cena a Rock-Bottom after the match was more than, nothing at all considerable occurred. I do not know about the fans watching at house, but for those in attendance, myself included, seeing Rock alone was worth it. He gave us anything and then some, which includes sticking about afterwards to continue to entertain us.

One more factor worth mentioning was the truth that the New York City fans actually gave Miz his props when he came out, a lot more so than we did for Cena. Miz held his personal contemplating the opposition and should have been given a main push considering that.

I feel I get it. WWE can not blame Rock since they’re depending on him to carry the ball when he returns. With WrestleMania almost here and the promise of appearances top into it, the business will want him a lot more than ever to spark interest in the primary occasion.

Cena is the most significant name in the business and is untouchable he too is an important piece of the WrestleMania puzzle. R-Truth has already been in the dog residence for his indiscretions. I suppose the logical scapegoat would be Miz, appropriate?

Miz deserves better as I already stated! He is an unbelievable talent that can only get better as time goes on. Do not put the blame on his shoulders and punish him, put it on a quantity of other variables and move on.

Miz is a star but not a large sufficient star to carry a spend per view on his personal, not but anyway. This is the element exactly where WWE permits Miz to do what he does greatest and continue to evolve.

If there is any hope for the future of the company, talents like Miz want to be cultivated in order to carry on.

Adequate with the lame excuses and finger pointing, WWE! Miz is prepared to pick up where he left off, on the path to superstardom.

It’s been clear for several years now that while aspiring doctors may start medical school as happy and as healthy as their non-doctoring peers, four years later they aren’t.

More than 20 percent end up with depression, more than half suffer from burnout, and in any given year, as many as 11 percent contemplate suicide. All of these statistics, of course, bode poorly for patients. Doctors who are burned out are more likely to make errors and to lose sight of the altruism that led them to go into medicine in the first place.

Fortunately, the subtext of this growing body of data — that there is something toxic about the medical education process — has not been lost on the educators who run this country’s medical schools. Some have hired mental health experts for their institutions, created counseling centers and set up confidential Web sites and hot lines; others have developed elective courses in meditation and mindfulness, switched from letter grades to pass-fail systems and revamped class schedules to foster better work-life balance.

Despite the good intentions, their efforts continue to be stymied by one thing: Students aren’t participating. As one educator recently told me, “I keep seeing the same 10 students at all these events, and I’m not even sure they’re the ones we need to be reaching.”

But one medical school, Vanderbilt, in Nashville, appears to be succeeding, with a Student Wellness Program that includes activities like yoga classes, community service events, healthy cooking classes, forums on nutrition and sleep, and a mentoring program that pairs senior students with newer ones. The key to its success? Empowering and partnering with those who have the most at stake — the medical students themselves.

Aside from an annual daylong retreat and a weekly medical humanities course, “most of the ideas are generated by the students themselves,” said Dr. Scott M. Rodgers, the associate dean of medical student affairs, who started the program with a group of students six years ago and continues to be its guiding force. “We just try to come up with any necessary money.”

One example of this unique collaboration is the program’s college system, which assigns students to one of four “colleges,” each with its own set of faculty advisers. Instituted nearly five years ago and intended simply as an improvement over a traditional but more random advising program, the new system was also set up in a way that allowed Vanderbilt students to introduce innovations.

They ran with it. Drawing on cultural cues that resonated with their peers — in this case the Harry Potter stories — they took an active role in naming the colleges after former medical school deans and imbued each with a particular personality. Completing the picture were artfully designed crests, designated college colors and devised mottos in Latin that range from the more noble (“Primus Inter Pares,” or “First Among Equals”) to the tongue-in-cheek put-down (“Commodum Habitus Es,” or “You Have Just Been Owned”).

As college loyalties began to develop, students organized friendly competitions that promoted healthy habits and community service. These events culminated four years ago in the first College Cup, a now annual weekend affair where pride runs deep. Amid bagpipes and a marching band, colleges vie to outdo one another in events like a 5-K run, an “Iron Chef”-style cooking competition and a trivia contest.

“These programs keep you from putting your whole self-worth on the next exam,” said Kathleen Weber, a first-year student who was also quick to point out the superiority of her own college, Batson.

There are critics, however, who charge that with so much to learn in so little time, medical students — and their future patients — would be better served if they expended more, not less, effort on studies. Others have voiced concern that students end up feeling a “reverse pressure” to choose extracurricular activities over studying.

But proponents are quick to counter that medical students in general aren’t people who must be persuaded to study. What they need is encouragement to balance academic dedication with the self-care that will sustain them in the long run. “You can’t keep running on fumes,” said Dr. Johanna N. Riesel, a former medical student at Vanderbilt now in her second year of surgical training at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. “You have to learn how to maintain some sense of equilibrium and sanity in a relatively insane process.”

While no one yet knows the long-term effect of Vanderbilt’s innovations – or, for that matter, of any programs designed to promote “wellness” — Dr. Rodgers and his colleagues and students at Vanderbilt remain committed to their initiatives. For them, the implications of medical student depression and burnout are simply too important to ignore.

“It’s a challenge for anyone to stay healthy and happy,” Dr. Rodgers said. “But when doctors are able to stay healthy and happy, that means patients get physicians who are more compassionate and selfless. They end up with doctors who really have the energy to invest time in them.”

(PEOPLE.com) — Playing a nasty schoolgirl in the new dark comedy “Young Adult,” Charlize Theron recalls her own high school days as the girl who never fit in, especially with the boys.

“I wore really nerdy glasses because I was blind as could be and the boys didn’t like [me],” the actress, 36, told PEOPLE recently in New York. “I didn’t have any boyfriends, but lots of crushes.”

Ignored by a boy she had a crush on, she says she had longed to be part of the in-crowd, causing her to do “crazy things.”

“I wasn’t in the popular crowd. There was a really popular girl at school and I was obsessed with her. I mean you would go to jail for that stuff today,” Theron says with a laugh. “I was in tears one day because I couldn’t sit next to her.”

She also says she was bullied by her classmates for her glasses and not having the perfect haircut and clothes.

“I actually got a lot of the mean girl stuff from the ages of 7 to 12. I was pretty much a mess in primary school,” she admits. “But I got that out of my system by the time I got to high school and was more immune to all of that stuff.”

“Young Adult” opens December 9.

Following the the Compton Unified School District told us Sasha Grey by no means read to students, we posted this pic which clearly shows otherwise.
