(CNN) – The Obama administration’s breach of religious freedom and freedom of conscience through the Health and Human Services agency’s contraception mandate has reignited the national conversation about the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, or “Obamacare.”

Obamacare encapsulates many of the major conservative objections to President Barack Obama’s presidency: the vast and costly expansion of government, increased taxes and regulations and the infringement of personal and religious liberties as is now being litigated in the federal and Supreme Courts.

The latest contraception mandate is only a precursor of what could come once Obamacare is fully implemented. The law itself grants the Health and Human Services Secretary – an unelected bureaucrat – far reaching powers. One breakdown of the law found more than 700 mentions to instruct that the secretary “shall” take action and more than 200 cases in which the secretary “may” issue regulations. We won’t know the full extent of the secretary’s power until Obamacare is enforced, but if the contraception mandate is any indication, the secretary could have the power to regulate what health care Americans receive, what doctors they see and what insurance coverage they are eligible for.

Therefore, the Republican message in 2012 shouldn’t focus singularly on the economy. Politically, that would be unwise. Even just the rumblings and perception of an economic recovery could be enough to carry President Obama to re-election. Instead, Republicans should get back to the message of 2010, the year of the tea party and the retaking of the House of Representatives. For Republicans, the stakes are economic liberty and the integrity of the Constitution. Thus, the message of the tea party is more relevant now than ever.

There are many Americans who see past the Obama administration’s rhetoric. They understand that a right created by the government, free access to birth control, does not trump the First Amendment and the freedom of religion or conscience. A , indeed, shows that half of all Americans disapprove of this new policy, while 44% approve. I believe the more this policy is explained, the more the former number will increase and the latter contract.

Furthermore, Obamacare will dramatically increase the cost of government health care and welfare programs while growing the national debt. According to the Congressional Budget Office’s estimates and budget outlook for the next decade, by 2022, spending on federal health care programs across the board will more than double. In particular, federal outlays for Medicaid will double , and spending per beneficiary in Medicare Part D will also double.

The shellacking that Democrats took in the 2010 elections was largely a referendum on Obamacare. Today still, the president’s landmark legislation remains a winning issue for conservatives. The latest Rasmussen poll shows that 53% of Americans at least somewhat favor repeal of the health care law and 38% oppose it.

Regardless of what the Supreme Court rules in the spring, Obamacare is indelibly symbolic of President Obama’s record. Conservatives are economically, morally and philosophically opposed to Obamacare. Yet until now, there has been low turnout in some of the recent GOP presidential primaries and caucuses. To reverse that, Obamacare, representing all that it means, should be the rallying cry that will reinvigorate and enlarge the base of opposition to the president – again.

But on this occasion I was a lot more than a little apprehensive due to the fact I was in the business of 5-time Olympian Graham Bell who appears to have a compulsion to do one thing entirely bonkers, not to say terrifying, as soon as he gets to the best of a mountain.

The co-presenter of the BBC’s High Altitude, the show that’s especially excellent to watch from the comforting safety of your armchair (though even then you feel you should be wearing a safety harness), already had an ominous glint in his eye as we boarded the cable vehicle to Plan Checrouit in the Italian resort of Coumayeur.

His enormous backpack was naturally complete of crampons, pitons, ice-axes, ropes, transceivers, shovels, probes and other paraphernalia for use in an expedition developed to leave one scared witless.

At Cresta Youla, immediately after one more couple of lifts, Bell surveyed the options. There had been towering rock faces just about everywhere you looked, as nicely as a couple of precipitous off-piste ski routes accessible. It was just a case of which ridiculous challenge he had in thoughts.

The aim is for the stunts to be difficult and entertaining for the Television audience, but very survivable!

‘But I also enjoy what you’d call household skiing, taking in the scenery, enjoying a lot of lazy turns – and a lovely long lunch on the sunny terrace of a fabulous mountain restaurant.’

Nicely, there’s no shortage of gorgeous loved ones skiing in chilled-out Courmayeur, one particular of the most relaxed resorts you are most likely to come across. I adore the large mountain feel of the spot, with Mont Blanc, Europe’s highest mountain, towering over the slopes – although the skiing usually is a lot tamer than the surroundings would recommend. This genuinely is skiing that’s perfect for intermediates, with couple of daunting surprises, on piste at least.

And the slopes of Courmayeur have an X-element that truly separates them from other ski regions. For fine days there is a lovely terrace, with chairs luxuriously sheepskin covered, and for cooler days the interior is cosy and intimate. It is run with dedication and panache by the very welcoming Anna and Paola Costa – anything on the menu is a delight, from the delicate, soft mozzarella, the fabulous property-created pates served with a selection of chutneys, and the meat-filled ravioli, to the great chicken curry or wild boar stew. It has a wonderful wine list also, and grappa that will delight those who typically don’t like grappa.

In spite of the attractions of Chiecco, the lunch, or possibly the excellent Italian wine that went with it, seemed to waken one thing basic in Graham – a desire to go back to the top rated of the mountain and do something macho, when the obvious factor to do was order yet another bottle.

‘Let’s see if we can ski off-piste all the way from the top to the bottom,’ he suggested, draining his glass. Nicely, yes, ok, that sounds a great idea…does not it?

In truth it was. A fabulous run, with practically no 1 else in sight, from Cresta d’Arp all the way down to the bottom of the gondola at Dolonne, the last stretch trickily criss-crossing the course of a stream and following its narrow icy bank.

We felt an exploration of the bars in the Via Roma, the pedestrianised primary street of the town, was justified immediately after such a day. The greatest of these is the Bar Roma, exactly where you can unwind on comfy, ancient sofas and enjoy an impressive buffet of free canapés to go with your drink.

But we also enjoyed the Prive, the Petit Bistro and the Café della Posta – the diversity of bars and restaurants exactly where you can truly sit and chat is a single of this charming and standard town’s large strengths.

‘So what’s in the rucksack then Graham?’ I asked our intrepid leader more than a glass of Aperol spritzer. ‘Oh, nothing at all much – transceivers, shovels, probes, crampons, ropes…the usual. I think we may possibly want them tomorrow for a tiny excursion I have in thoughts.’
